Jason Osborne is a thought leader in higher education. His background in educational psychology, statistics and quantitative methods, along with that gleaned from serving as Provost at Miami University, Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University, and Department Chair at the University of Louisville gives a unique perspective on the real-world challenges and opportunities that higher education leaders need to understand.
Jason Osborne believes that effective leaders like Provosts within Higher Education must share best practices and evidence-informed decisions as higher education faces unprecedented challenges from public health, societal expectations, demographic challenges, workforce development needs, and cultural narratives hostile to the centuries-long benefits of higher education. With his experience at multiple highly ranked institutions like Miami University and Clemson, Jason W Osborne is able to provide guidance and support during these uncertain times.

As Miami University's Provost and Executive Vice President Jason Osborne helped guide the university through the COVID-19 pandemic while also implementing the MiamiRISE aspirational strategic plan designed to position the university for success. Through Boldly Creative initiatives and deep engagement with shared governance, he closed a budget deficit, helped found an Honors College, refreshed and renewed the curriculum, implemented DE&I efforts, invested in research support for faculty, ensured teaching faculty had promotion paths and access to long-term contracts, enhanced local and institutional shared governance, invented a collaborative academic program incubator, and improved student success. We invested in online degree programs and digital professional development certificates to better serve our public mission.
As Dean of the Graduate School, Jason was responsible for expanding graduate and professional education at the Clemson, Greensboro, and Charleston campuses. As a newly designated Carnegie R1, it was important to ensure the university had the right mix of degree programs, and that graduate education was a valued partner in enhancing faculty research. Through a collaborative program incubator process, we helped departments and colleges implement new interdisciplinary degree programs, expanding revenue, and we created GRAD360, a novel professional development enterprise to support graduate student success.
My goal as chair was to ensure we had effective mentoring for all faculty at all ranks and appointment types, and to ensure this department was contributing to UofL's mission. We led efforts throughout campus to ensure inclusive access to restrooms for our LBGTQ+ population, and supported UofL's Carnegie Engaged University classification through the Cardinal Success Program, where we partnered with the City and School district to establish free mental health clinics in the underserved west end. Our novel model included establishing a clinic inside a high school, helping the Academy@Shawnee improve outcomes for students, faculty, and the community. Acknowledging the unique value of this collaboration, the Commonwealth of Kentucky identified this program as worthy of state funding.
With ten years of leadership in higher education, as Provost at Miami University, Dean at Clemson, and department chair at the University of Louisville, Jason shares his expertise in helping institutions better serve their mission.
Clemson awards its University Research Award for achieving "rare career milestones" demonstrating excellence in research, artistry, and impact.
The award is named for Miami’s motto “prodesse quam conspici,” which is written on its seal and means “to accomplish without being conspicuous.”
“This medal stands for servant leadership with great humility,” said Miami Ambassador Renate Crawford.
These awards are given to the author or authors of the manuscripts deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the professional literature.
Authors are eligible for the AARC/MECD Patricia B. Elmore Award for Outstanding Research in Measurement and Evaluation if their manuscript was published in Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development
Faculty Favorite awards are faculty nominated by their students for excellence in teaching. Jason was recognized as a "Faculty Favorite" for the 2014-2015 academic year for his teaching in applied statistics.
The PStat® Accreditation testifies that there is a body of knowledge known as statistics acquired through formal education, work experience, and ongoing professional development activities. Accreditation provides a measure of assurance to employers, contractors, and collaborators of statisticians and a mark of accomplishment to society at large.
